Revoke Carbon Emissions Levy - FABAG to Gov't

Amidst mounting discontent over the imposition of the carbon emissions levy, the Food and Beverages Association of Ghana has aligned itself with calls for the abolishment of this tax. The association's stance echoes the sentiments expressed by numerous individuals and business entities urging the government to scrap the controversial levy.

Critique of the Carbon Emissions Levy

In a statement endorsed by the association's chairman, John Awuni, the tax was characterized as callous and fundamentally counterproductive to the business landscape. The association condemned the insensitivity of introducing additional taxes, especially in the aftermath of the economic challenges faced by Ghanaian industries post-Covid-19.

Impact on Businesses and Consumers

The Food and Beverages Association cautioned that the imposition of the tax would escalate the operational costs for businesses, exacerbate consumer woes, and foster an environment ripe for corruption. The perceived repercussions of the levy include heightened production expenses, compromised business integrity, and a deepening of the already hostile business climate.

Inquiries on Implementation and Measurement

Questioning the practicality of monitoring carbon emissions from industries, the association raised concerns over the methodology for measuring emissions, ensuring data accuracy, and preventing potential irregularities in fee collection. Demands for transparency in data reporting and fair tax assessment underscored the skepticism regarding the efficacy and accountability of the proposed carbon levy.

Advocating for Environmentally Friendly Solutions

In a parting appeal, the association urged the government to pivot towards sustainable energy alternatives like nuclear, solar, hydro, and other renewables to curtail emissions. Emphasizing the importance of investing in eco-friendly energy sources as a proactive measure to diminish environmental impact, the association underscored the imperative of steering towards greener practices to mitigate carbon footprints.
