Withdraw Emissions Levy Now - NPP's Nana B to Gov't

Henry Nana Boakye, the National Organiser of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), is advocating for the immediate withdrawal of the Emissions Levy, stressing that the imposition of such levies is typically reserved for developed nations with a prevalence of electric cars to counter climate concerns.

In a discussion with Accra-based Peace FM, Nana B urged President Akufo-Addo to instruct the Finance Minister to retract the levy, labeling it unnecessary and inappropriate given Ghana's current vehicle landscape.

The implementation of the Emissions Levy Act, 2023 (Act 1112) has provoked concerns within the transportation sector, notably the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), which has signaled the potential necessity of increasing fares in response to the levy.

Despite earlier deliberations, including discussions with the Finance and Transport Ministries, the GPRTU expressed dissatisfaction, emphasizing the unforeseen challenges posed by the sudden implementation of the emissions levy tax, which they intend to pass on to passengers.

Conversely, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has officially initiated the implementation of the Emissions Levy Act, 2023 (Act 1112) from February 1, 2024, aiming to apply a levy on carbon dioxide equivalent emissions from internal combustion engine vehicles. The GRA underscored the initiative's alignment with the government's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
