KATH records 500% Hike in Stroke Cases

The number of stroke patients hospitalized to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital has increased dramatically over the years, from 200 instances to over a thousand cases recorded annually.

The hospital has implemented a time-limited, less invasive therapy approach to improve stroke care in response to this growing concern.

A blood clot that restricts or blocks blood flow to a portion of the brain is the cause of reduced blood flow stroke, one of the most prevalent kinds of stroke. At the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, stroke is become a common medical illness. As specialists investigate contemporary treatment modalities, there are problems in managing this condition.

Previously, traditional drugs and medications used in stroke treatment were ineffective in dissolving blood clots, often resulting in permanent disabilities for patients. The hospital has now embraced active stroke thrombolysis, a procedure that involves administering clot-busting drugs to dissolve blood clots during an acute ischemic stroke.

The incorporation of thrombolysis services into routine stroke care at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital marks a significant milestone. Consultant Neurologist Dr. Fred Stephen Sarfo described the new treatment method as revolutionary, emphasizing its potential to restore blood flow to the brain and significantly improve patient outcomes.

The Chief Executive of the hospital, Prof. Dr. Otchere Addai-Mensah, highlighted the institution's commitment to optimizing tertiary healthcare delivery through innovation and research. He encouraged stakeholders and the public to act promptly in admitting stroke patients to benefit from this specialized service.

Deputy Regional Director of Clinic Care at Ghana Health Service, Rita Larsen-Reindolf, emphasized the importance of raising awareness about stroke and supporting the hospital's efforts. She called on stakeholders to prioritize public education to ensure timely access to advanced stroke treatment at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
