Licensure Exams Is An Unfair Barrier To Employment For Qualified Teachers.

Sammy Gyamfi, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Officer, has raised significant concerns about the Teacher Licensure Examinations, denouncing the process as an unfair barrier to employment for qualified teachers. This follows a campaign promise by the party’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, to cancel the Teacher Licensure Examination, a requirement imposed on trained teachers to obtain a license to teach.

During a discussion on Metro TV on Thursday, November 23, 2023, Sammy Gyamfi highlighted the perceived injustices surrounding the examinations, emphasizing that the licensure process unfairly restricts employment opportunities for qualified teachers. He pointed out the irony of the government recruiting NABCO graduates, who lack professional teaching training, to teach children while sidelining qualified educators who have undergone extensive training in colleges of education.

Gyamfi stressed the frustration faced by these qualified teachers, many of whom remain unemployed even after completing four years of schooling, holding Bachelor's degrees in Education. He described the ordeal they face, including having to navigate a system that sometimes forces them to resort to bribery in an effort to obtain a teaching license, all while being overlooked for employment opportunities.

Criticizing the lack of transparency in the examination process, Gyamfi pointed out the absence of a clear marking scheme or known pass mark, noting that this allowed the government to control the number of teachers granted employment each year. He emphasized that the examination's opaque nature enables the government to systematically limit the number of teachers gaining employment, deeming the entire licensure process as a tool for suppressing the employment of qualified educators.

In describing the Teacher Licensure Examination as a deceptive maneuver orchestrated by the government, Gyamfi emphasized the adverse impact it has had on numerous qualified teachers, accusing the administration of using this examination as a ploy to artificially control the employment numbers, thereby denying opportunities to deserving individuals.
