The association underscored the direct implications of the proposed VAT on electricity charges, noting that businesses heavily reliant on electricity for operations would face heightened financial strain.
GUTA cautioned that such financial strain could potentially lead to reduced production capacity, employee layoffs, and even business closures, ultimately hindering economic progress and impeding job creation opportunities.
Additionally, GUTA raised concerns about the challenges posed by the emission levy, emphasizing issues related to double taxation and the absence of adequate infrastructure for electric vehicles, including charging stations and a reliable power source. It pointed out that Ghana already levies energy taxes, such as petroleum tax on gasoline, diesel, kerosene, and LPG.
