GUTA Opposes VAT Implementation and Emission Levy

The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has resolutely stood against the potential implementation of Value Added Tax (VAT) on electricity charges and the imposition of an emission levy, asserting the grave economic repercussions these measures could pose for businesses operating within the country.

In a press release dated February 4, 2023, GUTA highlighted its apprehensions regarding the projected adverse effects of these additional costs, particularly emphasizing the compounding impact on the already substantial cost of conducting business in Ghana.

The association underscored the direct implications of the proposed VAT on electricity charges, noting that businesses heavily reliant on electricity for operations would face heightened financial strain.

GUTA cautioned that such financial strain could potentially lead to reduced production capacity, employee layoffs, and even business closures, ultimately hindering economic progress and impeding job creation opportunities.

Additionally, GUTA raised concerns about the challenges posed by the emission levy, emphasizing issues related to double taxation and the absence of adequate infrastructure for electric vehicles, including charging stations and a reliable power source. It pointed out that Ghana already levies energy taxes, such as petroleum tax on gasoline, diesel, kerosene, and LPG.

The communique, signed by GUTA President, Dr. Joseph Obeng, urged the government to reconsider these proposed measures and engage in extensive consultations with key stakeholders, particularly the business community, before implementing new taxation policies.

Dr. Obeng stressed the significance of prioritizing the voices and concerns of businesses to ensure that policies do not impede economic growth and investment.
