Withdraw 15% VAT Directive Else We'll Proceed With Our Demonstration - CLOGSAG Executive Secretary

Isaac Bampoe-Addo, the Executive Secretary of the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG), has adamantly emphasized the inevitability of the planned nationwide demonstration by Organised Labour, unless swift action is taken by the government to retract a directive.

The essence of Mr. Bampoe-Addo's assertion was made clear during his appearance on JoyNews' The Probe.

Expressing the firm resolve of Organised Labour, Mr. Bampoe-Addo underscored that the planned demonstration, scheduled for February 13, will proceed as planned unless the government takes concrete steps to rescind the directive in question.

He made it abundantly clear, stating, "I can assure you that the only thing that can stop us is the withdrawal of this letter. The law is saying we should just notify the police; the police cannot tell us not to go on our demonstration, so we are just notifying them."

Mr. Bampoe-Addo stressed that the withdrawal of the directive, particularly the Finance Ministry's letter instructing ECG and NEDCO to implement a 15% VAT on electricity, is the sole action that can avert the impending demonstration.

He further noted that his association, along with 35 other organized labor unions, is fully prepared to mobilize for a substantial demonstration should the government fail to rescind the directive.

This resolute stance from Organised Labour comes in response to the insistence of the government on the implementation of the 15% Value Added Tax (VAT) on residential electricity consumption. The directive, issued by the Finance Ministry to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCO), has sparked significant discontent and opposition within the labor unions.

In a separate development on the same show, President of UTAG, Prof Mamudu Akudugu, refuted claims that workers are being unfair to the government. Instead, he articulated the perspective that the burden of taxes imposed on the populace has reached a suffocating level.
