Excuse of Fuel Scarcity Causing Dumsor False - ECG to PURC

Conflicting explanations for the country's ongoing problems have resulted from disagreements between the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) regarding the current unstable state of the nation's power supply.

Although the PURC asserted that fuel shortages affecting thermal plants were the cause of the supply issues, ECG angrily denied this. Energy sector sources say that the problems with the power supply are likely to continue, and Ghanaians should prepare for extended bouts of "dumsor".

Dr. Eric Obutey, the director of research at PURC, confirmed that stakeholders at the Ministry of Energy had discussed gasoline; however, Samuel Dubik Mahama, the director general of ECG, rejected the idea that fuel scarcity was the reason for the current state of affairs. Mahama emphasized that ECG is not implementing load shedding measures and assured the public that there is no need for alarm concerning the ongoing power outages.

The conflicting narratives between ECG and PURC have sparked debates, with the Minority in Parliament and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) raising concerns about a looming power crisis in Ghana.

John Jinapor, the Ranking Member on Parliament's Mines and Energy Committee, highlighted two key factors contributing to the challenges: aging generating plants that encounter operational issues and financial constraints affecting fuel purchases.

Jinapor pointed out the financial struggles faced by state agencies within the power production and transmission sector, citing the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation's (GNPC) inability to meet payment obligations to the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP). This financial strain has reportedly led to disruptions in gas supply, exacerbating the country's energy woes.
