Former US Officials Reaffirm Strong Support for Taiwan Following Presidential Election

Despite China's threats, former top US officials flew to Taiwan to reiterate Washington's unwavering support for the island after it chose a president Beijing loathed. Lai Ching-te, the leader of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), was elected to an unprecedented third term in government. Beijing was outraged by this, and ties between the US and China were strained as a result.

While visiting Taiwan, former US national security advisor Stephen Hadley congratulated the island nation on its election triumph and hailed its democracy as a "shining example for the world". Congratulating Lai and the people of Taiwan, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized the robustness of Taiwan's democratic system and electoral process. China responded sharply to these affirmations because it saw them as a betrayal of the "one-China principle."

This also underscores the depth of Taiwan's geopolitical entanglements: the Chinese embassies in Japan, the UK, and Canada chastised their governments for congratulating Lai on his triumph.

Under Xi Jinping, China's assertive stance has led to increased pressure on Taiwan, culminating in severed official communication with Taipei's government in 2016. Lai's election is unlikely to immediately ease cross-strait tensions.

Though the US formally cut ties with Taiwan in 1979 and shifted diplomatic recognition to Beijing, it has maintained a strong unofficial relationship with the island and is obligated by law to provide means for its defense. Despite these provisions, the US has been intentionally ambiguous regarding its commitment to defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese attack.
