PURC Announces Adjustments to Electricity Tariffs for Residential Consumers


The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has revealed slight modifications to electricity tariffs for residential consumers in its latest tariff review for the first quarter of 2024. The adjustments involve no changes for lifeline consumers (0-30 kWh) and those within the 0-300 kWh consumption range.

As detailed in a statement by the PURC, residential customers consuming 301 kWh and above will encounter a modest reduction of 6.56% in their electricity tariffs. In contrast, non-residential consumers falling within the 0-300 kWh consumption bracket will not witness any alterations in their tariff rates. The statement also confirmed that water tariffs across all customer categories will remain unchanged during this period.

The tariff adjustments were communicated through a press release authored by Dr. Ishmael Ackah, the Executive Secretary of the PURC, and made available to Citi News. This review encompasses electricity, natural gas, and water tariffs to ensure equitable pricing and affordability for consumers.


In the previous tariff review carried out in November 2023, the PURC had implemented minor changes, including a 0.34% increase in water tariffs and a 1.52% decrease in electricity tariffs, effective from December 1, 2023.

Under the revised tariffs, residential water tariffs experienced a marginal rise from GHS/m³ 4.72 to 4.74, while non-residential water tariffs increased from GHS/m³ 14.13 to 14.19. Water sachet producers and industrial consumers also observed adjustments in their tariff rates during this period.

The Commission emphasized that these tariff adjustments were made after considering the competitiveness of industries and the socioeconomic conditions of Ghanaian citizens. The PURC's commitment to maintaining fair pricing structures was highlighted in the announcement, which specified the variations for different consumer segments.

According to the statement, there will be no changes (0%) in electricity tariffs for lifeline consumers and residential consumers within the 0-300 kWh bracket. However, residential consumers using 301 kWh and above will benefit from an average 6.56% reduction in electricity tariffs. Non-residential consumers within the 0-300 kWh range will see no alterations in their rates, while those above 301 kWh will experience an average reduction of 4.98%.
