Water Crisis in Greater Accra is Due to Population Growth - GWCL

The Greater Accra Region's growing population has been cited by the Ghana Water Company, Limited (GWCL) as the main factor contributing to the current water problem. The water company's managing director, Dr. Clifford Braimah, expressed concern that Accra's rapidly increasing population will surpass the company's capacity.

People in a number of Accra neighborhoods, such as Adenta, Kasoa, Weija, and Apaapa in La, have complained about the unpredictable water supply, claiming that it has severely disrupted their everyday lives. Due of irregular access to water, some households have turned to paying exorbitant fees for water purchased from tankers.

In addressing the issue during an interview on Citi FM, Dr. Braimah acknowledged the imperative for GWCL to modernize its infrastructure to align with the escalating demands of Accra's expanding populace. He underscored the need for the implementation of a new system at Kpone to augment water production. However, he lamented the persistent financial constraints faced by the company, stalling progress despite ongoing efforts since 2017 and 2018.

Highlighting the impact of limited water production in the face of surging population, Dr. Braimah elucidated that the company currently operates under constraints, necessitating the intermittent supply of water to meet the communities' needs. He emphasized the inherent challenges posed by the disproportional demand for water in the context of limited supply, underscoring the need for judicious distribution to ensure equitable access.

Despite acknowledging localized system faults, Dr. Braimah urged residents to promptly report such issues to the nearest GWCL office for expedited resolution. He accentuated the company's commitment to addressing localized challenges and reaffirmed the importance of community input in facilitating swift corrective action.
