Darkness Engulfs Accra Academy as ECG Disconnects School Over Unpaid Arrears


Due to overdue arrears, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) enforced a power outage, leaving the Accra Academy Senior High School enveloped in darkness. According to a media professional who had visited the school, the entire campus was completely dark, forcing students to study by torchlight.


Speaking to Citi News of Accra, an unidentified instructor expressed serious concerns about the extraordinary circumstances that developed at the institution. The teacher described it as the first time in his teaching career when ECG officials—who appeared to be from head office—were adamant on cutting off the power supply in spite of entreaties and attempts at compromise. The instructor additionally emphasized the danger to the students' safety while highlighting the effect on instruction and learning.

In a poignant plea, the teacher voiced distress over the power outage, labeling it as the saddest day in his three-decade teaching tenure. The teacher lamented the lack of prior knowledge about the exact amount owed to the ECG and emphasized the plight of approximately 3,000 students currently affected by the situation.

Calling on the ECG leadership to reconsider their actions, the teacher implored them to prioritize the well-being of the students and urged for a swift resolution to the issue at hand. The appeal resonated with a call for compassion and understanding, emphasizing the potential repercussions on the academic environment and the students' welfare.
