Senior Staff Association Rejects NLC's Directive to End Strike

The Senior Staff Association of Public Universities and the National Labour Commission (NLC) are at odds over the association's determination to carry out the strike in defiance of NLC orders to halt industrial action.

The Association's National Chairman, Isaac Donkoh, underlined the organization's dedication to putting members' interests first and the necessity of extensive deliberation prior to taking unilateral action to end the strike. He emphasized the delay in calling meetings of the Association and stated that talks will be scheduled prior to speaking with the government about this issue.

The NLC's directive, issued on January 25, instructed the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU), the Senior Staff Association of Public Universities, and the Federation of Universities Senior Staff to immediately cease their ongoing strike. The NLC underscored that resolving the unions' demands hinges on their compliance with this directive.

Ofosu Asamoah, the Executive Secretary of the NLC, reported some progress in addressing the concerns raised by the unions, emphasizing the need for the unions to call off their strike action in order to move forward with resolving the outstanding issues.

Despite the NLC's position, the teacher unions, including the Senior Staff Association of Public Universities, have displayed unwavering persistence in their stance. The Association is slated to engage in discussions with the NLC on Thursday, February 1, indicating a continued commitment to pursuing their objectives.

The ongoing strike by these teacher unions comes in the wake of grievances against the government's handling of pension-related issues and the alleged unfair termination of their overtime allowances, showcasing the depth of discontent within the academic workforce.
