The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has said that it will not back down from launching a statewide walkout in response to what they consider to be the government's lack of responsiveness to their grievances about working conditions.

Specifically, talks about base pay—which is, of course, connected to market premiums—were highlighted by UTAG's General Secretary, Dr. Eliasu Mumuni, as crucial matters that might lead to a reconsideration of their choice. Speaking to the media in Accra, Dr. Mumuni declared that UTAG members are prepared to reveal the precise day on which their strike will begin.

Dr. Mumuni emphasized the need for unified support from their membership to signal a collective affirmation toward the envisioned course of action. Furthermore, he underscored the association's proactive engagement with the National Labour Commission (NLC) regarding their grievances, setting the stage for potential escalation if negotiations with the government yield no tangible progress.

Notably, a recent development marked the departure of both UTAG and the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG) from a meeting with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC). Citing what they perceived as the Commission's lack of genuine intent, contempt, and indifference toward critical aspects of their conditions of service, the associations expressed their unequivocal disapproval, highlighting a stark disengagement from unproductive dialogues. UTAG and TUTAG conveyed a cautionary message, indicating a forthcoming expression of their concerns in a more conspicuous manner to their employers or the government.
