Ekumfi Chiefs Fume at Akufo-Addo For Political Discrimination

In a response to President Akufo-Addo's recent statement regarding the alleged neglect of Ekumfi's development needs due to the community's rejection of the NPP Parliamentary candidate in the 2020 election, the Chiefs in Ekumfi, situated in the Central Region, held a fervent press conference.

During the conference, the Paramount Chief of Ekumfi, Odeefo Akyin VIII, emphasized the fundamental democratic principles at play, asserting the populace's right to freely elect their parliamentary representatives. The paramount chief vehemently refuted the suggestion that the President has the authority to dictate whom the people of Ekumfi—or any constituency—should elect to represent them in Parliament.

"Incredibly surprising and hard to fathom," Odeefo Akyin VIII stated, "We are extremely shocked by those statements and struggle to believe the same to be true because we particularly did not believe that the President...could politically segregate the country and treat others with disdain and dislike."

The Chief directly called upon President Akufo-Addo to furnish data on the developmental projects executed by the former Member of Parliament for Ekumfi, Ato Cudjoe. This request aimed to challenge the basis for the President's claim that retaining Ato Cudjoe would have been warranted.

Furthermore, Odeefo Akyin VIII underscored the recent defeat of Ato Cudjoe in the NPP's internal party primaries for the 2024 General Election. This emphasized questioning why Ekumfi should bear the brunt of his departure in 2020, especially when even the President's own party members had rejected him.

Expressing deep concern about the potential impact of the President's remarks on the democratic right to vote freely, Odeefo Akyin VIII stressed that the community had exercised its democratic right in the last election, and it should not be wielded as a tool for retribution.

Steering the conversation to the lingering dispute over the autopsy report of the late President John Atta Mills, the Ekumfi chiefs made a fervent appeal for collaboration between the late president's family and the state to resolve the contentious issues.

Odeefo Akyin VIII did not mince words when he criticized the public exchanges, deeming them "appalling" and "disgraceful," while cautioning against allowing external influences to perpetuate disunity.

Reiterating the urgency to grant the late Professor Atta Mills a peaceful rest, Odeefo Akyin VIII declared the traditional area's determination to take resolute action against anyone contributing to any dishonorable acts. The chiefs also urged the President to prioritize the unity and welfare of the community, irrespective of political affiliations, emphasizing the necessity of prioritizing development projects for the benefit of all Ekumfi residents.
