President Akufo-Addo announced the coming end of the period in which Ghana sold raw bauxite and the beginning of a new one in which the country will process its bauxite internally. The Volta Aluminium Company Limited (VALCO) and the larger downstream aluminium industry will receive the refined products. This change represents an important step toward value addition in the bauxite sector and a critical turning point in Ghana's industrialization process.
Expressing his optimism, Akufo-Addo underscored the pivotal role this initiative will play in propelling Ghanaian industrialization forward. He envisions a future where domestically refined bauxite will fuel the production of a wide range of products, including components for motor vehicles, aircraft, roofing sheets, and household utensils.
President Akufo-Addo also reaffirmed his dedication to unlocking the economic potential of the Atewa Forest Range in Kyebi once the legal challenges surrounding the area are resolved. He envisions the development of the Kyebi bauxite mine and refinery as a catalyst for job creation and economic empowerment in the region.
In his remarks, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the meticulous planning and deliberation that have underpinned these strategic moves, signaling a commitment to sustainable development and economic growth. By shifting focus from raw bauxite export to local refining and value addition, Ghana is poised to chart a new course in its industrial landscape.
