ECG Re-connects Parliament After Part Payment of GH₵23m Debt

In a recent disruption, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) took the drastic measure of disconnecting Parliament from the national grid due to the Legislature's outstanding GH₵23 million debt to the utility provider.

The sudden disconnection cast the parliamentary chamber and MPs' offices into darkness, leading to a challenging situation where staff and members found themselves stranded in elevators. Swift action by fire service personnel became necessary to rescue individuals trapped in the malfunctioning elevators.

However, following swift action by Parliament to settle a significant portion of the debt, exceeding GH₵10 million, the national legislative body has been successfully reconnected to the power grid, restoring normal operations.

This power outage incident unfolded during a critical legislative session as lawmakers engaged in debates over President Akufo-Addo's recent State of the Nation Address (SONA). Amidst the deliberations, the outage struck while the Outgoing Deputy Minister for Finance, Abena Osei-Asare, was passionately defending the President's address on the parliamentary floor.
