Parliament Denies GH¢23m Debt to ECG

Accusations that Parliament owed the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) GH¢23 million in overdue electricity bills have been rejected, disproving accusations that the amount owed was the reason for a power outage on Thursday during the session.

The appropriate payments to the power distributor have been made, according to Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, Deputy Clerk of the Corporate and Financial Management Services Division in Parliament.

The outage happened when MPs were debating President Akufo-Addo's most recent State of the Nation Address (SONA). As the energy supply was cut off, presumably as a result of ECG's "Operation Zero Balance" effort, departing Deputy Minister for Finance Abena Osei-Asare was speaking.

Mr. Ahumah Djietror expressed frustration, explaining that despite Parliament fulfilling its payment obligations, there have been instances where the ECG system failed to register the transactions accurately.

He stated, “As far as we are concerned, we’ve made payment, all the payment we have made, some have not reflected in their system. We have a breakdown, so we showed it to the Deputy Managing Director, we are just coming from his office."

"We have a gap in terms of the reconciliation as to what is the outstanding bill.”
