Parliament to be in Darkness Over GH₵23m Debt

The goal of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) representatives who have invaded Parliament's grounds today is to cut off the legislature from the country's electrical supply. Parliament owes GH₵23 million in unpaid debts, which is the reason for this severe measure.

Over the past year, the ECG has been aggressively pursuing tax collection measures, and their representatives have been spotted placing themselves in strategic locations around important power transformers that provide electricity to the home. Parliament may not have the authority to carry out its mandated function today if action is not taken.

This development comes on the heels of the recent power cut at Accra Academy Senior High School due to GHS480,000 in arrears owed to the ECG. Speaking on the issue, an ECG representative highlighted the company's ongoing struggle with mounting debts and emphasized the need for a more assertive approach in revenue collection to meet their financial obligations.

The situation underscores the critical importance of timely payment for electricity services and the repercussions of accumulated debts on public institutions like Parliament.
