Parliament is Evaluating the Anti-LGBTQ bill Clause-by-Clause - Majority Leader
The house is presently working on a clause-by-clause revision to the bill on the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values, also known as the anti-gay law, according to Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the majority leader in parliament.
According to Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the House hopes to finish this procedure by Friday, February 9 at the latest.
The bill's main goal is to make LGBTQ-related activities and behaviors illegal in Ghana. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu stressed that Friday is the anticipated date for the bill's thorough modification.
He went on to say, "We aim to get a resolution by Friday. The Business Committee on February 5 scheduled the first consideration of the bill to begin on February 7.
Among the key provisions of the proposed bill is an increase in the maximum prison sentence for engaging in same-sex activities from three to five years. Additionally, the bill seeks to outlaw individuals who identify as LGBT, queer, pansexual, or other non-traditional gender identities. It also imposes penalties on those who advocate for the rights of sexual and gender minorities.
In addition to the anti-gay bill, the Ghana Boundary Commission and the Ghana Hydro Power Authority bills are currently undergoing deliberation in Parliament.
