Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu Was Forced to Resign - Dr. Draman

Dr. Rasheed Draman, the Executive Director of the African Center for Parliamentary Affairs, has raised concerns regarding the resignation of former Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu from his position.

Sources within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) hierarchy revealed that the Suame MP voluntarily stepped down during a meeting involving the NPP caucus in parliament and the executive, which included President Akufo-Addo. However, Dr. Draman expressed doubts about whether Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu's resignation was truly voluntary or if he was compelled to do so.

Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu officially resigned as the leader of the majority caucus in Parliament amidst speculations about his potential removal to make way for his Deputy, Alexander Afenyo-Markin. Some suggested that his resignation was linked to his new role as the Manifeto Committee Chairman for the NPP's 2024 election campaign, but Dr. Draman questioned this reasoning, noting that other MPs successfully manage dual roles.

Dr. Draman drew parallels between Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu's situation and that of Haruna Iddrisu from the NDC, expressing disappointment in the handling of the resignation process. He stressed that a more constructive approach could have been taken to prevent discord surrounding Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu's departure.
