Exit of Experienced MPs is a Threat to Our Democracy - Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu

During an interview on GTV on Thursday, February 1, Majority Leader in Parliament Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu expressed his apprehensions about the state of the country's democracy following the departure of seasoned lawmakers from the legislative house.

Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu emphasized the need for serious reflection within political parties regarding this worrying trend, urging the two major political parties in Ghana, NPP and NDC, to take action. He cautioned that failure to address this issue could compromise the growth of the country's democracy.

"I am concerned about the NPP, and I am worried about the Parliament of Ghana, and I am worried about our democracy. The longer a person stays in Parliament, the better their performance. It is for them, their party, Parliament, and our democracy," he stated.

Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu highlighted the constant departure of MPs and called for serious introspection by the parties, especially NPP and NDC, regarding this trend. Notably, several seasoned legislators from both the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have either declared their intention not to seek re-election or have been defeated in their respective parliamentary primaries.

Prior to this, 18 NPP legislators, including Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, voluntarily chose not to contest in the elections. Additionally, 16 incumbent legislators on the NDC side experienced defeat in their parliamentary bids in May 2023.
