Ofori-Atta No Longer Deserves a Place in Gov't – Prof. Bopkin

The recent selection of Ken Ofori-Atta, a former minister of finance, as a senior presidential advisor and special envoy for international finance and private sector investments has drawn criticism from economist and finance professor Prof. Godfred Bokpin.

Prof. Bokpin cited Mr. Ofori-Atta's performance history before expressing his dissatisfaction with his new position. Given his success, he questioned the choice to reappoint Ofori-Atta to a higher position, saying that, in his opinion, Ofori-Atta did not merit the additional responsibilities.

Prof. Bokpin stated that he first approved Ofori-Atta's appointment as Finance Minister because of his credentials and background in the private sector during an appearance on JoyFM's Top Story on February 26. However, he noted that Ofori-Atta has not lived up to expectations in recent years and has failed to demonstrate the necessary leadership qualities.

Prof Bokpin highlighted a lack of proactive decision-making by Ofori-Atta during critical periods, particularly in response to economic challenges post-Covid-19. He compared Ghana's economic situation unfavorably to that of Kenya, attributing Ghana's hardships to a failure in seeking timely support from international institutions like the IMF.

Following President Akufo-Addo's appointment of Ofori-Atta on February 15, there have been widespread concerns and calls for the revocation of the appointment from various quarters, including grassroots organizations like the Alliance for Foot Soldiers and Advocacy.
