National Service Will be Optional if I am Elected - Dr. Bawumia

The Vice President and flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, ignited discussions with his speech at the UPSA auditorium in Accra, where he unveiled a bold plan to reshape Ghana's national service scheme to prioritize job creation for the country's youth.

In his proposal, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the need to exempt graduates who secure employment post-education from national service, aiming to expedite their entry into the workforce. This policy shift, if implemented under his presidency, would enable young professionals to contribute immediately to the economy.

Furthermore, the Vice President suggested making national service optional for all graduates, granting them the autonomy to decide whether to participate. This flexibility could potentially enhance career prospects for students by offering them more choices upon completion of their studies.


Dr. Bawumia envisions this revamped approach to national service as a catalyst for companies to engage in campus recruitment drives, tapping into a pool of skilled graduates eager to embark on their professional journeys.

In his address, Dr. Bawumia stated, "To assist our youth in securing jobs, I propose a reevaluation of our current national service scheme. My administration will advocate for the exemption of employed graduates from national service, transforming it into a voluntary program. This shift will not only empower students but also encourage corporate entities to actively recruit from universities."
