2024 Elections: EC Must Ensure Credible Electoral Processes - ECOWAS


The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is urging Ghana’s Electoral Commission to ensure the upcoming polls are conducted in a credible manner that garners admiration from Ghanaians and the wider West African sub-region. This call comes amidst concerns over declining democracy in West Africa, marked by unconstitutional changes in government and election-related violence across ECOWAS states.

Protecting Democracy in the Region

President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray, emphasized the significance of Ghana maintaining a good example of democracy in the sub-region. Dr. Touray stressed the importance of organizing the elections in a manner that reflects the aspirations of the Ghanaian people, with credibility, fairness, and inclusiveness being paramount factors in the electoral process.

Support for Independent Electoral Commissions

President Touray highlighted ECOWAS’s commitment to supporting independent electoral commissions, emphasizing the importance of meeting the public’s expectations. He underscored the need for the Electoral Commission of Ghana to prioritize credibility and inclusivity in the electoral processes, aligning with the mission and vision of the West African Community.


Monitoring Electoral Activities

ECOWAS announced plans to deploy long-term election observers to oversee activities leading up to, during, and following the elections in Ghana. The observers will assess not only the election day proceedings but also the overall electoral process, ensuring transparency and accountability throughout.
