NDC Plans Petition Against EC Official Over Alleged Political Affiliation
After making contentious comments implying that an Electoral Commission (EC) official had ties to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced that it will petition the EC for removal.
By openly declaring himself as a member of the ruling party during the NPP primary in the Nandom Constituency, Isaac Darko, the Municipal Electoral Officer for Nandom, caused uproar. Darko was criticized for mixing his political views with his job as an election officer after he cheerfully mentioned his party affiliation in a widely shared video that introduced electoral personnel.
The subsequent announcement of the incumbent MP Ambrose Dery as the NPP candidate for the 2024 election, due to being uncontested, only added to the concerns raised by the NDC.
Dr. Omane Boamah, the NDC’s Campaign Director, conveyed the party's plan to formally petition the Upper West Regional Director of the Electoral Commission for the application of stringent disciplinary action against the purportedly biased electoral official. Simultaneously, the party is set to address the matter with the Chairperson of the EC in Accra.
In his Facebook post, Dr. Boamah voiced the party's resolve not to overlook the alleged implications of biased EC officials in the electoral process, emphasizing the NDC's commitment to safeguarding the best interests of the nation. He also indicated the party's renewed participation in IPAC meetings, with Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the NDC, and himself set to represent the party and Ghana's interests in the upcoming meeting.
