Sierra Leone's Foreign Minister Timothy Musa Kabba has refuted allegations made by the junta-led regimes of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso that the West African regional bloc Ecowas is being unduly influenced by external powers.

The joint announcement by the three countries, declaring their withdrawal from Ecowas, emphasized that the bloc had allegedly deviated from its founding principles and become a threat to member states and their citizens, citing concerns about the influence of foreign powers.

In response, Mr. Kabba, who has been involved in mediating between Ecowas and the junta-led regimes, condemned the accusations, labeling them as "unfortunate".

He reiterated that Ecowas's intervention aimed to facilitate a peaceful resolution to the impasse and ensure regional peace, security, and stability. Furthermore, he emphasized that Ecowas's role in mediating the conflict did not involve undue influence from external powers.

Tensions between Ecowas and the three countries escalated following the bloc's decision to suspend their membership and impose economic sanctions after coups in Niger in 2023, Burkina Faso in 2022, and Mali in 2020.
