Delay In Increasing Transport Fares Affecting Us - GPRTU

Citing the effect of growing expenditures on its operations, the Ghana Private Road and Transport Union (GPRTU) is fervently requesting an immediate increase in transportation charges. 

The organization underlined that its members are being harmed by the fare adjustment's delay and is calling for a speedy resolution.

The general secretary of the GPRTU, Godfred Abulbire, emphasized the major effect on commercial drivers of the recent increase in replacement parts and other accessories. In a media interview, Abulbire stressed how urgently transportation costs needed to be adjusted in order to solve the difficulties their members are facing.

He noted that severe tax implications had an impact on all spare parts last year, which resulted in a significant rise in their price. Additionally, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) recently informed them of revised taxes on commercial cars, effective from January, further adding to the financial burden on commercial drivers.

Moreover, the recently approved Emissions Levy Bill, which introduces an annual fee of GHC100 for all owners of petrol and diesel cars, has raised concerns. The GPRTU has submitted a petition to the Speaker of Parliament, requesting a reconsideration of the bill, given its potential impact on commercial drivers.

The government's intention behind this levy is to encourage the adoption of environmentally friendly energy sources for vehicle power, aligning with its commitment to climate-positive actions and carbon offset initiatives.
