Ministry of Transport Dismisses Reports of Impending Public Transportation Fare Hike

The Ministry of Transport has refuted claims of an imminent rise in public transportation fares nationwide. This comes in response to a statement by the Ghana Private Road and Transport Union (GPRTU), which announced a 20% increase in transport fares effective January 24, 2024, citing excessive taxes on spare parts as the reason for the adjustment.

In a rebuttal to GPRTU's announcement, the Ministry of Transport has urged the public to disregard the projected fare hikes and continue paying the existing fares. The Ministry clarified that there have been no negotiations with transport operators regarding fare revisions. It assured that any future decisions on fare adjustments will be communicated to the public in due course, as has been the practice.

Emphasizing its commitment to fair and reasonable public transport fares, the Ministry assured that it will consider the interests of both transport operators and the general public. It affirmed its dedication to ensuring that any fare adjustments are made transparently and with the public's best interests in mind.
