Naana Opoku-Agyemang is Over 70 – Afenyo-Markin

Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin drew the ire of the opposition when he launched a scathing attack on the personality of John Mahama's running mate, Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.

During the debate on the State of the Nation Address on March 11, the legislator accused Prof Opoku-Agyemang of failing to fulfill her duties in previous government roles and questioned the NDC's decision to select her as the running mate. He suggested that the NDC's leadership choices reflect a lack of foresight and a tendency to maintain the status quo.

Afenyo-Markin's remarks triggered a strong reaction from the NDC members, who demanded an immediate retraction and apology from the Majority Leader. The tensions in the chamber escalated, with the Minority caucus expressing their displeasure by banging tables, demanding accountability for the disrespectful comments made against Prof Opoku-Agyemang.

Ibrahim Ahmed, the Banda MP, emphasized the inconsistency in criticizing age as a factor in leadership by pointing out President Akufo-Addo's age and his presidency candidacy. The demand for an apology was clear—a sentiment echoed by the NDC members as they stood firm in protest until redress was offered.

To mitigate the escalating conflict, Second Deputy Speaker Andrew Asiamah Amoako opted to adjourn the house temporarily for an hour to diffuse the mounting tensions and allow for a semblance of order to be restored.

After the break, the Majority Leader acceded to the pressure and withdrew his contentious statements, leading to a resumption of the debate on the State of the Nation Address.
