We will build the Black Stars with homegrown players – Mahama

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has unveiled his vision to rejuvenate the Ghanaian football scene by focusing on nurturing homegrown talent for the national team. This strategic plan is set to be implemented if he secures the presidency in the forthcoming 2024 elections.

Following Ghana's disappointing performance in the recent African Cup of Nations, where the Black Stars bowed out at the group stage for the second consecutive time, Mahama highlighted the urgency to address the deficiencies in the country's football development system. He attributed the team's lackluster showing to the erosion of grassroots football programs, particularly the absence of colts football initiatives aimed at grooming young talents.

Path to Resurgence

Mahama emphasized the significance of rekindling grassroots football structures, harking back to the era of colts competitions and school tournaments where budding talents were scouted and nurtured. He stressed the need to rebuild this foundation to ensure a steady influx of skilled players into the national setup at various age levels.

Community Engagement and Support

During a community engagement event in Bongo as part of the NDC's "Building Ghana Tour", local stakeholders voiced their aspirations for a synthetic turf to bolster football development in the region. Mahama pledged to collaborate with the Ghana Football Association to materialize this project and underscored the importance of fostering a strong grassroots ecosystem to feed into the national team.

Vision for the Black Stars

In his address, Mahama outlined a strategic roadmap for constructing a formidable Black Stars squad primarily composed of homegrown talents who have undergone extensive training and cohesion. While not dismissing the inclusion of foreign-based Ghanaian players, he emphasized the necessity of a core team comprising domestic players who have honed their skills through long-term collaboration and intensive practice.

Overhauling Ghanaian Football

Central to Mahama's plan is a comprehensive overhaul of Ghanaian football in partnership with the relevant football bodies at the local level. This initiative envisions the identification and support of promising players through grassroots tournaments, provision of scholarships for their education, and a systematic pathway for their progression into national teams.
