Salt FM Shut Down by NCA Over Non-renewal of Authorization License

Tensions rise in Agogo, Asante Akyem North District of the Ashanti region, following the abrupt closure of Salt FM by a team from the National Communications Authority (NCA).

The station was visited on Tuesday, February 6, with the NCA citing the non-renewal of its authorization license as the reason for the forceful shutdown.

The NCA officers descended on the radio station's premises, demanding a complete cessation of operations, sparking anger among some residents of Agogo. In response, residents staged a demonstration to resist the closure, leading to an uneasy atmosphere in the area.

The closure of Salt FM comes on the heels of owner Ohene Kwame Frimpong's thwarted attempt to hold a health walk in Agogo on Sunday, February 4, to announce his intention to run as an independent parliamentary candidate in the 2024 elections. Security officers intervened just before the health walk, citing a violation of the Public Order Act due to the lack of police notification about the public gathering and street walk.

Speculations are rife in Agogo that the closure of the radio station is part of a wider strategy to impede Mr. Frimpong's independent candidacy bid. Despite the closure, management of Salt FM is yet to issue an official statement to address the situation, leaving the community in suspense.
