Nigeria's Information Minister Defends President Tinubu Amid Calls for Resignation

Nigeria's Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has rebuffed demands for President Bola Tinubu's resignation, labeling them as a diversionary tactic.

Following appeals from some governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for President Tinubu to step down due to the country's economic woes, Mr. Idris asserted on Sunday that the President would not resign and was fully equipped to address Nigeria's economic challenges.

He will not shirk his duties but will confront and conquer these obstacles, laying the groundwork for a rejuvenated Nigeria."

Nigeria is grappling with a severe economic downturn, marked by a sharp decline in the local currency's value and widespread financial hardships among citizens.

In the northeastern state of Borno, several Nigerians are abstaining from food following a call for "divine intervention" by Governor Babagana Zulum amidst the country's severe economic and security crises.

Governor Zulum urged residents to observe a one-day statewide fast on Monday in light of the escalating food prices and the alarming frequency of landmine explosions along major roads in the region.

Bello Zabarmari, a local resident, shared with the BBC that he and many others have embarked on the fast, seeking divine intervention to address their pressing issues. He expressed hope that their prayers would be answered soon, applauding the governor for initiating the fasting initiative.

Umar Shehu, a resident employed in the state fire service department, disclosed that he and his colleagues are also partaking in the fast as per the governor's directive.

Nigeria is currently navigating through one of its most challenging economic periods, characterized by exorbitant prices of food and essential commodities in recent months.
