Gov't Must Acknowledge Funding Issues Surrounding Free SHS - IFEST

Dr. Peter Anti, the Executive Director of the Institute for Education Services (IFEST), emphasized that unless the government acknowledges the funding issues surrounding the Free SHS program, addressing the problem will be challenging.

He noted that while Ghanaians can voice their concerns about the program, they lack the authority to implement necessary changes.

Dr. Anti's comments follow the disconnection of power at Accra Academy due to a GHS480,000 debt owed to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) since July 2023. Speaking on JoyNews, he expressed that the government should have anticipated a surge in enrollment when introducing the free SHS initiative.

He criticized the lack of infrastructure improvements in schools during the double-track system implementation and highlighted the need for educational leaders to acknowledge and address the system's challenges. Dr. Anti stressed that until these leaders accept the existing issues, progress will be hindered by complaints and discussions.

Furthermore, Dr. Anti pointed out instances where parents had to contribute funds for basic amenities in schools due to insufficient government support. He argued that solely relying on government funding for free SHS is not sustainable and secondary schools require additional financial resources.

In conclusion, Dr. Anti emphasized the importance of exploring alternative funding sources to support policies like free SHS, ensuring that children have access to quality education without financial barriers.
