Familiarize Yourselves With Local Governance Rules - Akufo-Addo Urges Assembly Members


Assembly members should familiarize themselves with the laws that define their individual responsibilities within the nation's local governance system, as stressed by President Nana Akufo-Addo.

He emphasized that having this information will assist avoid confrontations with conventional authorities, opinion leaders, and other stakeholders in addition to chief executives of metropolitan, municipal, and district governments.


Modern facilities and training resources have been added to the Institute of Local Government Studies (ILGS) by the government in order to improve assembly members' abilities to provide local leadership. The goal of this investment is to give assembly members the skills they need to effectively administer their respective regions.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) in Sekondi, Western Region, Mr Clifford Braimah, Managing Director of Ghana Water Company Limited, relayed President Akufo-Addo's message. The President highlighted that the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development, in partnership with the ILGS, will conduct orientation and training sessions to clarify the roles and responsibilities of assembly members.


President Akufo-Addo stressed the need for assembly members to redirect citizens' focus from central government and Members of Parliament towards district assemblies for local services. He encouraged assembly members to drive positive change, deepen local governance, and decentralize services, ensuring citizens' access to essential public amenities at the district level.

He urged assembly members to work collaboratively, devise innovative strategies for resource mobilization, and uphold selflessness, accountability, and effective stewardship in the service of their communities. Mr Abdul-Mumin Issah, the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), reiterated the importance of capacitating assembly members to fulfill their duties diligently and to maintain the Assembly's credibility.

Nana Barima Ekow Gyesa II, Chief of Fijai, emphasized the importance of collaboration between assembly members and traditional leaders to expedite development initiatives. The inauguration of the ninth STMA welcomed 57 members, comprising 40 elected representatives and 17 government appointees, marking a new phase in local governance for the STMA.
