Sports Ministry Used $1.5m on Black Stars AFCON 2023 qualifiers – Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, has disclosed that the Ghanaian government spent a total of GHS 19,262,766.35 (equivalent to $1.5 million) during Ghana's Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Qualifiers in Côte d’Ivoire.

Official documents revealed that the home and away matches versus Angola incurred a cost of GHS 7,452,437.71, while the two games with Madagascar amounted to GHS 8,395,434.13. Additionally, the matches against the Central African Republic cost the country up to GHS 3,414,894.51.

Ghana secured qualification for the Côte d'Ivoire 2023 Africa Cup of Nations through Ernest Nuamah's 83rd-minute winner against the Central African Republic on the final day of qualifiers. While the prize money for participation in the group stage remains unconfirmed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), quarter-finalists are set to earn $1,300,000.

In 2022, Ghana's Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif informed Parliament that the country had spent $2,500,000 during a campaign that ended in the group stage.

Ghana's elimination from the tournament was confirmed by Cameroon's 3-2 win over Gambia on Tuesday. The Black Stars garnered just two points from their three group games in Ivory Coast. If they had progressed to the knockout stage, they would have been paid a qualification bonus of $30,000.
