Ivory Coast Sacks Manager Despite AFCON Round of 16 Possibility
The host nation for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Ivory Coast, has taken the decision to dismiss manager Jean-Louis Gasset, even though there is still a possibility for the team to qualify for the round of 16.
The Elephants are on the brink of elimination after suffering consecutive group-stage defeats against Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea, the latter being a heavy 4-0 loss. However, they still have a chance to advance as one of the best third-placed teams, pending the results of the group stages.

In an announcement made on social media, the Ivory Coast Football Federation (FIF) revealed that Gasset and his assistant Ghislain Printant have been relieved of their duties "due to insufficient results." The FIF expressed regret for the team's performance during the group phase of AFCON 2023 but remains optimistic about the potential of the football team and called for unity for future events.
Gasset, who took charge of the team in 2022, replacing Patrice Beaumelle, has a background as an assistant coach for both the France men's national team and Paris Saint-Germain.
Ivory Coast secured their first AFCON victory on January 13 by defeating Guinea-Bissau 2-0, but subsequent losses to Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea have put their continuation in the competition out of their control. If they do qualify for the round of 16, they will face either Group B winners Cape Verde or the Group C winner.
