Government's No Ghana Card, No Salary Plan is Unfair - GFL

The Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL) has advocated for a collaborative effort between the government and the National Identification Authority (NIA) to register public workers who are yet to obtain their Ghana cards.

Abraham Koomson, the Secretary General of the GFL, emphasized the necessity for this collaboration, citing technical challenges that have hindered the registration process for numerous public workers.

Koomson's remarks come amid recent pronouncements from the Controller and Accountant General's Department (CAGD), stating that public workers without Ghana cards will not receive their monthly salaries commencing from February of this year.

During an interview with Oheneba Boamah Bennie on TV XYZ, Koomson deplored the government's decision to freeze the salaries of those public workers who have not acquired the Ghana Card due to technical hurdles. He criticized the approach, noting that although the government's intent was to cleanse the public payroll, the chosen methodology was flawed.

Expressing concerns about potential productivity decline, Koomson urged the government to devise a new registration process for all government workers in collaboration with the NIA to ensure widespread Ghana Card acquisition.

He emphasized the importance of facilitating registration directly in the workers' offices, stressing the imperative of maintaining productivity levels. Additionally, he called upon the Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG) to demonstrate against the outlined approach if the government fails to assist its members in obtaining the card.
