GFL Pushes for Retirement Age Increase to 65

The proposal to increase the retirement age from 60 to 65 years old is being made by the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL).

The proposal's significance and potential to allow skilled retirees to keep making valuable contributions to the workforce were underscored by Dr. Abraham Koomson, the GFL Executive Secretary. Citing instances when pensioners demonstrated health and fitness, Dr. Koomson underscored the need for discussion on this topic, which prompted the federation to seek discussions with the authorities and interested parties.

Recognizing the strength and capability of certain retirees, Dr. Koomson conveyed, "We realized that why don't we discuss and put this across for stakeholders and government and see whether some adjustment could be made so that we don't waste these people who have institutional memories to help the growth and development of wherever they will be working."

Alongside advocating for discussions, Dr. Koomson also acknowledged the necessity of amending the Constitution to accommodate the proposed alteration in the retirement age.

He made it clear that full talks with the administration are necessary and that constitutional amendments are not something that would happen overnight, saying, "We have to engage the government and discuss the possibility." Since it is constitutional, the Constitution ought to be changed.

We need to have conversations because it won't happen instantly," the speaker said in an interview with Citi FM.

The Executive Secretary argued—citing the judiciary as an example, where judges may work until the age of 70—that those without health issues might still make a significant contribution to the labor after the present retirement age.
