Akufo-Addo Appoints New Chief of Defense Staff, See His Profile
Major General Thomas Oppong-Peprah has been appointed by President Nana Akufo-Addo to the position of Chief of Defence Staff, with effect from February 1, 2024. Vice Admiral Seth Amoama, the current Chief of Staff, is set to retire soon, and this decision was decided after consulting with the Council of State. Eugene Arhin, the Director of Communications of the President's Office, released the statement on January 24.

In addition, Major General Oppong-Peprah will be replaced as Chief of Army Staff by Maj. Gen. Bismarck Kwasi Onwona, a nomination made by the President that will go into effect on February 1, 2024.
Profile of Major General Thomas Oppong-Peprah
Major General Oppong-Peprah was commissioned in the Ghanaian Armed Forces in 1986, giving him a distinguished military experience. His impressive educational background includes an Executive Master of Business Administration (Human Resource Management) from the University of Ghana, Legon; a Bachelor of Science in Administration (Human Resource Management) from the University of Ghana; a Post-Graduate Certificate in Public Administration from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration; and a Master of Arts in International Security and Strategy from Kings College, London.
He was the Ghana Army's General Officer Commanding the Southern Command before being appointed to his most recent position. In March 2020, he became the Chief of the Army Staff.
His international peacekeeping experience includes serving as a Humanitarian Officer for the United Nations Assistance Mission in Rwanda, a Military Observer for the United Nations Aouzou Strip Observer Group in Libya/Chad, and fulfilling various roles in United Nations missions in Western Sahara, Lebanon, and Israel. Additionally, he is a board member of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) Governing Council.
