Nikki Haley Makes History as First Woman to Win Republican Primary in Washington, DC

Nikki Haley achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first woman to win a Republican primary in Washington, DC. The former ambassador to the United Nations secured victory late on Sunday, marking a significant moment in her campaign.

However, despite this achievement, former President Donald Trump maintains a substantial lead in the race for the Republican nomination in the upcoming presidential election in November.

In the capital, Haley's sole remaining challenger for the nomination garnered 62.9% of the vote, while Trump received 33.2%. This outcome awarded Haley all 19 delegates at stake, reflecting a shift among Republicans away from Trump and his tumultuous administration.

Campaign spokesperson Olivia Perez-Cubas emphasized that Republicans near the Washington establishment are rejecting Trump's chaos and dysfunction. Despite this sentiment, the GOP appears poised to move past the controversies surrounding Trump, including legal challenges that could impact his eligibility to run in November.

Haley faces formidable odds in her bid to secure the Republican nomination against Trump and potentially face off against Democratic nominee President Joe Biden. Trump's dominance in the first eight nominating contests and expected success in the upcoming Super Tuesday races pose challenges to Haley's campaign.

Following Sunday's primary results, Trump's campaign sarcastically congratulated Haley as "Queen of the Swamp," highlighting the divide between establishment figures and outsider candidates like Trump.

The US Supreme Court is set to rule on a Colorado Supreme Court decision disqualifying Trump from running for president due to his alleged involvement in the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack. The Colorado court invoked a constitutional provision from the Civil War era, barring individuals who engaged in insurrection from holding office and potentially impacting Trump's candidacy in Colorado and beyond.
