Trump Steps up Attacks on Nikki Haley To Defeat Her In New Hampshire's Republican Primary

In the fervor of New Hampshire's Republican primary, Donald Trump has intensified efforts to outshine Nikki Haley, unleashing a barrage of attacks—some laced with racist undertones—while revving up his campaign activities and intensifying his assault on the airwaves.

Trump's team has consistently viewed Haley as a credible contender, prompting the former president to directly target her in social media posts and public appearances in the state.

An example of this came as Trump, in a social media post on his platform Truth Social, attempted to denigrate Haley by referencing her first name, Nimarata, albeit misspelling it as Nimrada. Furthermore, Trump amplified a falsehood suggesting that Haley was ineligible for the presidency due to her parents' citizenship status at the time of her birth, a claim debunked by her U.S. citizenship by birth in South Carolina.

These attacks bear striking resemblance to Trump's past denigrations of former President Barack Obama, which included promoting the discredited theory that Obama was not born in the U.S. and thus ineligible for office. Trump's recent actions have extended to sharing an edited image merging Haley's face with that of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton along with a modified campaign logo.

This overt antagonism towards Haley stands in stark contrast to Trump's remarks just days earlier in Iowa, where he commended both Haley and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis as "very smart, very capable people." However, Trump's campaign has consistently focused on countering Haley in New Hampshire, evident in the narrowing gap between their respective advertising expenditures in the state. With immigration as a focal point, Trump's team aims to cement their hold on Republican and right-leaning independent voters, cognizant of the sway that independents project on the primary's outcome.

Conversely, Haley's upsurge in New Hampshire benefits from the state's more moderate electorate and the substantial influence wielded by independents in the primary. To counter this, Trump's advertisements have sought to undermine Haley's appeal to independent and left-leaning voters by emphasizing her stances on Social Security and Medicare reform. Understanding the potential impact of independent voters, Trump's campaign is keen to balance the influence of left-leaning independents, asserting the need to uphold support from Republican voters.
