National Peace Council Declares Neutral Stance on Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill Passage

The stance of the National Peace Council regarding the passage of the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill by Parliament remains unwaveringly neutral, reinforced by Chairman Rev. Dr. Eric Adu-Gyamfi's emphasis on the organization's pivotal role as a mediator and the significance of impartiality in addressing contentious issues.

Rev. Adu-Gyamfi stressed the Council's commitment to neutrality despite being approached by concerned stakeholders, affirming their dedication to observing developments while refraining from taking sides on the matter.

In an interview on Sunday, March 3, he reiterated the Council's impartiality, highlighting its effectiveness in facilitating conflict resolution without bias.

Emphasizing the Council's positioning as mediators, Rev. Adu-Gyamfi clarified their decision not to adopt a specific stance on the passage of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, citing past instances where maintaining neutrality had proven crucial in mediating diverse perspectives and resolving conflicts amicably.

"We are waiting to see how things will unfold, so we know whether to mediate or intervene in the event of a conflict," he remarked, underscoring the Council's readiness to engage in conflict resolution should tensions arise following the Bill's enactment.

The Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, approved by Parliament on February 28, 2024, criminalizes LGBTQ activities and prohibits their promotion, advocacy, and financial backing. The legislation delineates penalties ranging from 6 months to 3 years of imprisonment for individuals engaging in such actions, with higher sentences of 3 to 5 years for those involved in promoting or financing LGBTQ activities.

Following parliamentary approval, the Bill has evoked criticism from various quarters, including Virginia Evelyn Palmer, the Ambassador of the United States to Ghana, reflecting the contentious and polarizing nature of the legislative move.
