Mepe Development Association Expresses Disappointment in Akufo-Addo's Response to Dam Spillage Disaster

The Akosombo Dam-caused disastrous flood tragedy has left the Mepe Development Association (MDA) feeling let down by President Akufo-Addo's perceived inadequate response.

The MDA denounced the government for what they called a "deafening silence" regarding the plight of over 40,000 displaced people affected by the flood disaster during the 2024 State of the Nation Address in an official statement signed by the organization's chairman, Fabian Mawulenu Kojo.


The president's actions were denounced by the MDA as "the epitome of insensitivity and neglect of responsibility" towards the communities that are experiencing hardship. Despite assurances given by state entities four months ago, the impacted regions, particularly those in the Lower Volta area, have been compelled to fend for themselves.


Tragically, lives have been lost, and a considerable number of residents are grappling with trauma and homelessness. The MDA further expressed dismay at the inaction of the inter-ministerial committee, led by the Chief of Staff, which has failed to visit the affected regions or collaborate with local leaders to evaluate the disaster's impact and strategize a way forward.

Moreover, the association shed light on the insufficient backing from the government and the sluggishness in disbursing earmarked funds for disaster rehabilitation. Despite assertions of substantial financial support, which encompass commitments from the World Bank and government funds, the Mepe Traditional Area, at the epicenter of the crisis, is yet to receive substantial aid.


Specific government officials, notably the Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Adutwum, and the Deputy Director-General of NADMO, Mr. Seji Saji, came under fire for what was perceived as their limited involvement in relocation initiatives and disaster management efforts.

The MDA stressed the urgent necessity for accountability and proactive measures from the government to assist in the relocation of flood victims, revive livelihoods, and reconstruct infrastructure within the impacted regions.

Concluding the statement, the association issued a call to action to President Akufo-Addo and the inter-ministerial committee, urging immediate responses to address the predicament facing the affected communities. The MDA cautioned that the people's patience was wearing thin, underscoring the exigency for prompt measures to alleviate their distress.
