Sudan Faces Unprecedented Hunger Crisis, IRC Appeals for Immediate International Response

Eatizaz Yousif, the Country Director of the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in Sudan, has sounded the alarm on the escalating hunger crisis in the region, exacerbated by persistent violence since April of the previous year.

Sudan is currently grappling with its most severe levels of food insecurity during what is traditionally the harvest season, a period when food supplies are anticipated to be more abundant.

Yousif expressed grave concerns, indicating that an estimated seven million people in Sudan could confront extreme hunger by the upcoming lean season in June 2024 if decisive action is not taken promptly.

The prolonged lack of access to adequate food leads to weakened immune systems, heightened susceptibility to diseases, and ultimately the risk of malnutrition and starvation among the population.

Emphasizing the urgency of the situation, Yousif stressed the imperative for immediate intervention from the international community and all parties involved in the conflict to avert what could evolve into one of the most significant hunger crises in decades.

The IRC, alongside fellow humanitarian organizations, advocates for a rapid escalation of food and cash aid, along with vital water, sanitation, and hygiene assistance to mitigate the escalating humanitarian emergency.

Furthermore, Yousif underscored the critical need for unimpeded access for humanitarian groups to reach populations in need. He emphasized the importance of diplomatic pressure exerted by the global community and regional stakeholders on all conflict parties to facilitate the negotiation and implementation of a comprehensive and sustainable peace agreement, essential for resolving the crisis in Sudan.

In response to the escalating conflict, the IRC has adapted its operations, intensifying its efforts to meet the rising humanitarian requirements in Sudan. The organization has realigned its programs to focus on urgent needs-based responses for internally displaced persons (IDPs), encompassing diverse sectors such as economic recovery, health, nutrition, and water and sanitation services.

Additionally, the IRC delivers integrated protection services, particularly catering to women, girls, and children, as well as empowerment programs geared toward survivors of gender-based violence.
