Petition to Destool Begoro Chief Who Endorsed Mahama Dismissed
The Ankobeahene of Begoro, Barfuor Owiredu Agyarko Minta II, is to be destooled for his support of National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama, according to a petition that was recently considered by the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council.
During a meeting in chambers on Monday, February 19, 2024, the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council firmly dismissed the petition demanding the destooling of Ankobeahene Owiredu Agyarko Minta II. Both the respondent and the petitioners received guidance and counsel during the proceedings.
Background and Allegations
The Begoro stool was represented by Barfuor Sakyi Amankwaa II, Otweresohene/Odau, Okyeame Owusu, and Daasebre Ofosu Kwabi Ayebiahwe, who led the petition. They claimed that the Ankobeahene's engagement in politics had damaged the stool's prestige. Allegations included making public pro-NDC statements during a campaign event featuring John Mahama, advocating for specific policies, and criticizing the current government's practices.

Legal Response and Jurisdictional Debate
In response to the petition, Ankobeahene Owiredu Agyarko Minta II, represented by counsel Isaac M. Larbi, ESQ, sought to annul the petition on grounds of jurisdictional inadequacies and questioned the authority of the petitioners to initiate destoolment proceedings. The affidavit lodged by the Ankobeahene’s legal team highlights the petitioners' alleged lack of status as recognized kingmakers within his family, thereby challenging their eligibility to pursue destoolment actions.
The legal motion contends that the matter falls under the purview of the Judicial Committee in compliance with legal protocols, contesting the petitioners' authority to initiate such a consequential process against the Ankobeahene.
