Ministry of Health Introduces NHIS Policy for Short-term Foreigners


In a significant move to enhance healthcare accessibility for foreigners on short visits, the Ministry of Health has rolled out a national health insurance policy targeting non-resident visitors in the country.

Developed in partnership with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) and collaborating partners, the policy, known as "National Non-resident Visitors Health Insurance", aims to facilitate comprehensive health coverage for temporary visitors.

Focus and Scope of the Policy

The newly introduced policy is tailored for non-residents spending less than six months during any 12-month period in Ghana. The Ministry of Health, led by Minister Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, underscored the alignment of this initiative with the National Health Insurance Act, 2012 (Act 852), emphasizing the Act's provisions for delivering quality and accessible healthcare to both residents and non-residents within the country's borders.


Establishment of National Non-Resident Visitors Health Insurance Scheme


Minister Agyeman-Manu announced the establishment of the National Non-Resident Visitors Health Insurance Scheme (NNRVHIS) as the primary mechanism for providing robust healthcare services to visiting non-residents in Ghana. Recognizing the unique characteristics of the scheme, special arrangements will be devised to mitigate potential risks and ensure seamless service delivery.

Technological Advancements for Enhanced User Experience

To streamline the application process for non-resident visitors, the Ministry of Health plans to set up the National Non-Resident Visitors Health Insurance Technology Platform (NNRVHITP). This digital platform will empower visitors to apply for health insurance remotely through their respective countries, enhancing accessibility and user experience. Minister Agyeman-Manu emphasized the platform's role in simplifying the application process and ensuring visitors can access healthcare services with ease.

By introducing this innovative health insurance policy, the Ministry of Health demonstrates a commitment to inclusivity, equitable healthcare access, and technological advancement in the provision of healthcare services for non-resident visitors, contributing to a holistic approach to public health management in Ghana.
