Incoming Ministers Cannot Make Any Meaningful Change - Jirapa MP
Jirapa Member of Parliament Cletus Dapilah expressed doubts about the effectiveness of the recently appointed ministers in President Akufo-Addo's last-minute reshuffle, speculating that they may have limited ability to effect meaningful change and more ceremonial functions.
His remarks reflect limitations on the incoming ministers' capacity to implement major policy changes, as they are based on the belief that the 2024 Budget has already been unveiled.
Limited Scope for New Minsters
Dapilah's remarks were in reaction to a statement released on February 14 by President Akufo-Addo's Director of Communication, Eugene Arhin. The message detailed President Akufo-Addo's reorganization efforts. He contended that the foundations established by the outgoing ministers had determined the course of government policy, so reducing the possibility of significant changes by the new appointees.
Ceremonial Roles and Timing Challenges
During an interview on JoyNews on February 15, Dapilah contended that given the current economic challenges, irreversible damage had already been inflicted, raising doubts about the potential for salvaging the situation. He highlighted concerns about the missed opportunity for government downsizing, particularly in alignment with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's pledge to reduce the number of ministers if elected President in 2024.
Focus on Political Dynamics
Dapilah pointed out the perceived motives behind the reshuffle, suggesting that it was aimed at bolstering Dr. Bawumia's electoral prospects without substantially reducing the government's size. He insinuated that the reshuffle primarily involved recycling old team members rather than introducing transformative change, potentially leading to discontent among some of the appointees unhappy with the arrangements.
