Government Collected GH¢1.19 billion From E-levy in 2023 - Deputy Finance Minister
According to Dr. John Kumah, the deputy minister of finance, the government received GH¢1.19 billion in revenue from the E-levy in 2023.
This significant sum has been thoughtfully distributed between programs like the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Program and the Ghana Enterprise Agency's YouStart Program, which are designed to address unemployment.
Dr. Kumah stressed the government's resolute commitment to use these monies to give young people access to employment possibilities. Speaking at the Wealth and Jobs Expo Ghana media launch, he urged Ghanaians to trust their government's endeavors to strengthen the country's economy.
He said, "Last year, E-levy generated GH¢1.19 billion, and as part of addressing the job situation, the government has allocated funds through YouStart from this E-levy revenue to GEA and NEIP to tackle unemployment in the country."
Concerns about rising unemployment were brought to light in the Third Quarter Labour Statistics Report of the 2023 Annual Household Income and Expenditure Survey. According to the research, the unemployment rate for the first three quarters of 2023 was 14.7%, which is a 1.1% increase over the 13.6% rate from the previous year.
Dr. Kumah admitted that there is still a gender difference in unemployment, with women constantly having higher rates than men. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to drawing in investments and creating an atmosphere that is favorable for the creation of jobs in spite of this tendency.
Recognizing the vital role of entrepreneurship in addressing unemployment, Dr. Kumah expressed confidence in entrepreneurship's ability to stimulate economic growth and alleviate joblessness.
