GJA Blasts NMC for Saying Media Blackout Against Offenders is Dysfunctional
The recent spate of attacks on journalists in Ghana has ignited a contentious debate between the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and the Chairman of the National Media Commission (NMC), Yaw Boadu Ayeboafo.
The GJA's call for media houses to boycott two politicians implicated in assaults on media personnel has sparked contrasting viewpoints on the most effective approach to combatting impunity and safeguarding journalists.

Following incidents involving journalists Mohammed Aminu Alabira and an unnamed Central region journalist allegedly attacked by political figures during their coverage, the NMC Chair, while unequivocally condemning such violence, advocated for victims to seek legal redress against perpetrators of these acts of aggression.
Yaw Boadu Ayeboafo expressed reservations regarding the GJA's directive to blacklist politicians involved in attacks, deeming it counterproductive to the public interest. Emphasizing the need for upholding the rule of law and due process, he urged for a focus on pursuing justice through legal means rather than resorting to boycotts as a solution.
In his remarks at an election reporting workshop, Mr. Ayeboafo cautioned against combating impunity with further acts of impunity, underscoring the importance of adherence to legal frameworks in addressing offenses against journalists. He highlighted the significance of condemning such acts while advocating for a lawful approach to combating violence and ensuring accountability.
Conversely, GJA President Albert Dwumfour expressed dismay at the NMC Chair's stance, characterizing it as unfortunate and lacking an understanding of the gravity of the situation faced by journalists. Dwumfour defended the GJA's decision, citing the necessity of exceptional measures in addressing extraordinary circumstances, such as attacks on press freedom.
Dwumfour criticized the NMC for purportedly failing to sufficiently protect journalists and media freedom, urging for a more proactive role in holding perpetrators of attacks on journalists accountable. He urged a collective effort in amplifying voices against assaults on journalists while advocating for stringent actions against those responsible.
