Critique of the Proposal
Kuagbenu highlights a perceived lack of comprehension on the part of Dr. Bawumia regarding the vital role of National Service, both at the individual and national levels. He emphasizes that while National Service personnel do not receive salaries from the state, they are provided with stipends, leading to substantial savings for the country.

Kuagbenu stresses the financial benefits accrued by the state through this arrangement and urges for alternative proposals that would be more advantageous to the unemployed youth.

Need for Understanding the Scheme
In his interview with Citi FM, Kuagbenu clarifies the distinction between stipends provided to National Service personnel and regular salaries, underscoring the economic significance of this arrangement for the country. He also notes that a lack of personal experience with the National Service might hinder a full grasp of its impact on national savings and contributions.

Bawumia’s Stance and Presidential Campaign
As the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2024 elections, Dr. Bawumia has pledged a shift towards making National Service optional if elected. This proposal aligns with his vision to enhance youth employment prospects and reevaluate the current scheme's structure.

National Service Scheme Overview
The National Service Scheme (NSS) in Ghana, established under the National Service Act of 1980, mandates that all Ghanaian graduates engage in a year-long national service initiative after completing tertiary education. The scheme's core objectives include fostering national unity, facilitating developmental initiatives, and providing graduates with practical work experience across various sectors.

Role and Benefits of NSS
Participants in the NSS program gain essential work experience, exposure to diverse sectors, and the opportunity to contribute to national progress. Through orientation programs, training sessions, and community service projects, individuals enhance their skills and understanding of civic responsibilities.

Upon successful completion of the National Service, participants receive certificates that can enhance their employment prospects in both public and private sectors. Furthermore, benefits may include priority consideration for government positions, access to financial aid, and scholarships.
